Cressbrook Cemetery

This private cemetery is located at Evelyn, south of Herberton. It contains the headstones of four pioneers of the district; Henry Stone, his wife Anna, her sister Mary Hull and her son-in-law Alexander William Fraser. Henry Stone had been the surveyor with George Augustus Dalrymple's expedition to North Queensland. In 1861, Stone became manager of the 'Valley of the Lagoons' pastoral run, inland from Cardwell. In 1868 Duncan McAuslan worked for Stone before both purchased adjoining nearby properties. By 1879 Stone and McAuslan had established 'Wairuna' Station. In 1883, Stone married McAuslan's daughter Anna. Her sister Mary married John Hull in 1887. After their mother died, Mary used her inheritance to buy a property at Evelyn, which she named 'Cressbrook'. Anna came to stay early in 1913, but died shortly after and was the first family member to be buried here. Henry Stone then came to live at 'Cressbrook'. Mary's daughter Rhonda married Alexander William Fraser in 1914. He was killed in an accident in 1915. Henry Stone died in 1919. He and Anna share a headstone at the cemetery. Mary Hull died in 1940, after spending 48 years at 'Cressbrook'. In 1948, the property was incorporated into Evelyn Station.
