Description
Sannantha papillosa is a shrub to 1.5 m high. The bark is grey and persistent, scaly to fibrous. The petioles are about 1 mm long, lamina obovate, 8 to 11.5 mm long by 2.2 to 3.8 mm wide, they are a similar colour on both surfaces, the oil glands are prominent, especially on the lower surface, about 0.5 mm apart. The apex is obtuse or acute. The inflorescence is axillary with the peduncles 10 to 12.5 mm long. The corolla (petals) is up to 9 mm across, the individual petals are orbicular, 2.5 to 3 mm by 2.5 by 3 mm and are white in colour. There are 11 to 14 stamens in groups of 1 to 4 opposite the calyx lobes. The fruit is hemispherical, about 1.5 by 3 mm, the valves are broad and somewhat woody, slightly exerted. The seeds are discoid, about 0.8 mm long, brown with flat sides and rounded backs and are finely reticulate (Bean, 1999; Wilson et al., 2007).
Sannantha papillosa is very closely related to S. tozerensis, but differs by its flower stipes, 2 to 3.5 mm long (3.5 to 5 mm for S. tozerensis), petals 2.5 to 3 mm in diameter (3 to 3.5 mm for S. tozerensis, fruits 1.5 mm long and 3 mm in diameter (2 mm long by 4 mm diameter in S. tozerensis), and the mostly narrower leaves (2.2 to 3.8 m wide, compared to 3 to 6.5 mm for S. tozerensis) (Bean, 1999).
