Regional ecosystem 9.12.40
Vegetation Management Act class Least concern
Wetlands Not a Wetland
Biodiversity status No concern at present
Subregion 2, 2.9, 3, (2.5), (2.6), (7.4)
Estimated extent1 Pre-clearing 12000 ha; Remnant 2021 12000 ha
Short description Melaleuca citrolens +/- Terminalia platyptera +/- Corymbia dallachiana low open woodland on rolling igneous hills
Structure code Low Open Woodland
Description Low open woodland to low woodland of Melaleuca citrolens (scrub teatree) +/- Terminalia platyptera (yellow-wood) +/- Corymbia dallachiana (Dallachy's gum) +/- Erythrophleum chlorostachys (Cooktown ironwood). The sparse shrub layer consists of Petalostigma banksii (smooth-leaved quinine), M. citrolens and Gardenia vilhelmii (breadfruit). The ground layer is frequently bare, with patches of short grasses including Eriachne spp., Aristida spp. and Schizachyrium spp. (firegrass). This community also occurs as short open tussock grassland wooded with low trees and shrubs of Melaleuca citrolens +/- Terminalia spp. Occurs on gentle slopes, footslopes, rolling hills and colluvial low slopes. Not a Wetland. (BVG1M: 21b).

Fire management guidelines SEASON: Burn in association with timeframes of surrounding country. INTENSITY: Do not burn deliberately. Can occasionally tolerate low intensity fire. INTERVAL: Consider broad fire interval such as 4-6 years. INTERVAL_MIN: 4. INTERVAL_MAX: 6. STRATEGY: Apply mosaic across the landscape to create patches of uneven aged regeneration. ISSUES: Melaleuca typically grows amongst open eucalypt woodland communities and should be managed with fire in association with surrounding country. However high intensity fire may slow or prevent regeneration.
Comments 9.12.40: Occurs north of Chillagoe in the central north of the bioregion.

1 Estimated extent is from version 13.1 pre-clearing and 2021 remnant regional ecosystem mapping. Figures are rounded for simplicity. For more precise estimates, including breakdowns by tenure and other themes see remnant vegetation in Queensland.
