This little 1938 timber country school is situated against the stunning backdrop of Mount Maroon is the hub of the local community. A provisional school was established here in 1891. Land was donated by Thomas Lodge Murray Prior and building materials were donated. The provisional school was built by volunteer labour. The area prospered as a farming and dairying area, particularly after the extension of the Fassifern railway from Harrisville to Dugandan in 1887. The Department of Public Instruction assumed management of the building in 1898 and it became the Maroon State School in 1909. A play shed was added in 1910, teacher’s residence in 1937, although the 1891 school building was inadequate by this time. Boonah builder J W Schultz and completed a new school building early in 1938. The site also importantly includes the Maroon district war memorial, unveiled in 1920 by General Birdwood. Forty-two men from the 35 families in the district enlisted and 17 of these did not return. Ipswich stonemasons RF Williams & Co sculpted the memorial which comprises a soldier statue atop a sandstone pedestal. A marble plaque was added later honouring the 42 men and women of the district who served in WWII.
